A time when 'tram' meant horse drawn

HOW times have changed. Two white horses pull a tiny tram along St John's Road in Corstorphine while eight passengers enjoy the fine weather on the open-top vehicle.

The photograph was taken around 1901 and the scene was a common sight outside the village's tram depot.

However, over a century later and the scene in Edinburgh looks very different. A model tram on display outside Jenners in Princes Street offers a glimpse into what the new tram network will look like, and the tens of thousands of people who have already visited the life-size replica will Fake Franck Muller know just how different a sight that is.

Tomorrow residents in West Edinburgh, which includes Corstorphine, will help to discover just how many aspects of life in Corstorphine have changed over the years by taking part in a rehearsal for the Scotland-wide census in 2011.

Around 40,000 households in West Edinburgh will receive questionnaires in time for the census rehearsal day tomorrow.

West Edinburgh was chosen as a rehearsal area because of its diversity across social groups and variety of accommodation. The rehearsal will test the arrangements for collecting details about people living in student halls and care homes, as well as people from eastern Europe and other minority communities, for the 2011 census.

The last census was conducted in 2001 and highlighted a range of interesting statistics for West Edinburgh.

Thirty per cent of residents in the area were not working or studying at the time of the census in 2001, while those in employment were working - on average - one hour longer in 2001, compared with 1991.

Our old photographs show the types of employment that were available around a century ago, from Turner's Ironmonger - photographed on St John's Road in 1911 - to the Corstorphine Inn on the High Street, pictured two decades earlier in the 1890s.

The 2001 consensus also found that the population of West Edinburgh dropped from 94,720 in 1951, to 77,245 in 2001.

One of the most dramatic changes revealed in the census was the number of West Edinburgh residents with a limiting long-term illness, which showed a staggering increase from 7842 in 1991, to 12,482 in 2001.
